Vein Treatment

Vein Disease

The Elite Vein Institute in Mission Viejo, CA specializes in treating vascular diseases that cause unsightly and painful varicose veins and spider veins. Dr. Anne Luhan and her experienced medical staff offer state-of-the-art diagnostics and procedures that can reduce the appearance of bulging, discolored veins while treating lower leg pain.

What Causes Spider Veins?

Spider veins lie closer to the surface of the skin than varicose veins and are smaller and more threadlike than varicose veins. Usually bluish-red in color, spider veins tend to branch out over the legs and parts of the face like a spiderweb. They erupt when blood pools in the veins due to damaged valves, excessive exposure to sunlight, hormonal changes occurring during pregnancy and menopause, or injuries.

What Causes Varicose Veins?

Major leg veins contain valves that prevent blood from returning to these lower veins as it is pumped throughout the body by the heart. Leg muscles help push circulating blood upward against the pressure of gravity. Vein valves that are weakened or damaged cannot close properly after blood is pushed upward, resulting in blood seeping back into leg veins. Known as “venous insufficiency,” this vein disease allows for continual pooling of blood in veins. Ultimately, veins start to swell, protrude above the epidermis, and become varicose.

Varicose Vein Treatment

Dr. Luhan specializes in several non-invasive varicose vein treatments that treat unflattering varicose veins so that legs look more youthful and attractive. Treating varicose veins can also treat leg achiness and fatigue that sometimes makes it difficult to work or perform daily tasks.* Treatments are administered at the Elite Vein Institute in Mission Viejo, CA and are usually completed in two to three hours.

Radiofrequency (RF) Ablation

RF ablation involves Dr. Luhan applying a safe degree of heat (radiofrequency energy) to tissues surrounding damaged veins. This heat causes scar tissue to develop that neatly and quickly closes varicose veins. RF energy is directed into tissues by the insertion of a thin tube into targeted veins, which only requires a local anesthesia to minimize discomfort.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

A minimally invasive alternative to the old-style ligation and stripping method of treating varicose veins, an ambulatory phlebectomy involves treating varicose veins and branching capillaries through tiny incisions made in the skin covering damaged veins.

Spider Vein Treatment

Spider vein treatments are one of the most common cosmetic dermatological treatments performed in the U.S. Millions of women (and men) suffer from unsightly spider veins that primarily affect the face, nose, and legs. Heredity, prolonged standing or sitting, rapid weight gain/loss, and hormone fluctuations are all risk factors contributing to the emergence of spider veins.

Sclerotherapy

By injecting a sclerosant solution into spider veins, Dr. Luhan effectively irritates vessel linings, causing vein walls to swell until they stick together. This forces blood to clot in the vein itself. Eventually, scar tissue develops and the veins fade away. Spider veins may reappear over time and require multiple treatments.

Foam Sclerotherapy

This technique is similar to traditional sclerotherapy, however foamed sclerosant drugs are used. This method is primarily used when treating larger, more apparent spider veins.

Mechanochemical Ablation (MOCA)

Elite Vein Institute is proud to offer Mechanochemical Ablation (MOCA), an infusion catheter system equipped with a rotating dispersion tip that introduces a special solution into veins to treat varicose veins. Treating vein disease with Mechanochemical Ablation (MOCA) is simpler and quicker than most vein treatment methods and causes less discomfort to the patient than other peripheral vascular procedures.
